Saratoga’s Whitney Handicap

Deep in Tradition and Talent !

Story by our very own Handicapper – SaratogaSam

The ESPN CREW was here in Saratoga Springs.

This was the 2nd year of the win and you’re in the Breeder’s Cup in October at Santa Anita California.

And the races were the 4 top stakes races here at The SPA!

The 7th race is the Diana handicap on the Turf at 1 1/8 mile with 10 horses entered.

The 8th race is the AG Vanderbilt at 6 furlongs sprint with 7 horses entered

The 9th race is the Go for Wand at 1 1/8 mile with 8 entered and 7 betting.

And last but the Best is the Whitney Handicap. It’s the 10th race on today’s card at the 1 1/8 mile with 11 horses entered with the off at 5:46pm EST.

I will run down the field for the Whitney and give you some selections from Saratoga Sam..

COMMENTATOR – The millionaire winner of 11 races and winner of the 2005 Whitney is a fast paced dangerous gelding bred in NY, trained by Nick Zito and ridden by J.R. Velazquez. High weight at 120 lbs and giving the field of 11 up to 7 lbs.

NOTIONAL – Fresh off a win in the grade 3 Salvator Mile at Monmouth, has won under $700,000 with four races on dirt. Coming into his own and weighted at 116 lbs. he is trained by Mark Hennig and ridden by Edgar Prado.

SOLAR FLARE – 2nd at Belmont in the Suburban Handicap cutting back from 1/1/4to 1 1/8 mile. He is improved in 2 starts since coming from Argentina where he was bred and raced. He is trained by Larry Jones and ridden by Gabriel Saez.

GRASSHOPPER – 2nd in the Travers Stakes here last year to Street Sense, he has 4 wins and 5 seconds in 12 starts. Under $700,000, he has been disappointing at low odds. Today the value will be there as he could improve for a piece of the purse. Trained by Neil Howard trainer and with jockey Robby Albarado who has ridden him to wins at the distance…

A.P.ARROW – This closer and winner of $1.4 million has 4 wins at the distance and needed his last race after finishing 4th to Curlin in the Dubai Classic. An outside chance and in the money too. Trained by Todd.Pletcher with Ramon Dominguez on top.

The odds will be the key today; but the bets could be as follows:

WIN $20.00 on #1 Commentator; $2.00 exacta box on #with 2, 3, 8, and 9 – A $16.00 investment

And a $1.00 exacta box on #3, Notional, with 1, 2, 8, and 9 for an $8.00 total wager

Also a $1.00 triple, #1 with #3, and with 2, 8, and 9 and #1 with 2, 8, 9 and 3 for a wager of $6.00.

Total wagering of $50.00

That’s all for now. Good luck and have a great day!
